This year, Covenant House is addressing five issues we feel are vital to homeless youth. Please take a moment to read through these and choose the issues you find most important. This feedback will drive our efforts to promote meaningful legislation to Congress.

• Promotion of Anti-Human Trafficking Efforts

This initiative promotes direct care for young survivors and efforts to stop exploitation throughout the United States, Canada and Latin America. We’re advocating for policies such as shelter support, mental health care, better education, life skills and job training for youth who have suffered the horrors of trafficking.

• Advocacy for More Federal Youth Programs and Support

Through the government appropriations process, we want to see more federal funding for opportunities for homeless youth. This includes pathways to living wage jobs, prioritization of services for mental health and substance use, access to food and stable housing.

• Advancing Solutions to End Youth Homelessness

Here at Covenant House, we aren’t just looking for ways to help youth experiencing homelessness today. We are working toward permanent solutions that will stop youth from becoming homeless in the first place — and Congress can help by reauthorizing the Runaway and Homeless Youth and Trafficking Prevention Act (RHYTPA).

• Addressing Trafficking and Migration Challenges

Poverty, violence and broken education systems throughout Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico are leading causes of migration to the United States. We support all policies providing assistance and protection to migrants who have experienced sex and labor trafficking.

• Finding Solutions for Youth Food Insecurity

We are urging Congress to reauthorize the Farm Bill to address food insecurity experienced by children and youth nationwide. Through the SNAP Education and Training program, as well as the benefits this program offers, we can help ensure our nation’s most vulnerable youth have access to nutritious meals.
