The Unconditional Love of Pope Francis

Typically, my reflections on Easter Monday are about joy and renewal. This Easter Monday, though, my joy was mixed with sadness when I learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My family and I and the whole Covenant House community join with our Roman Catholic sisters and brothers and all people of goodwill to celebrate the life and witness of Pope Francis as we mourn his passing. 

Francis’ boundless and unconditional love deeply resonated across Covenant House, a community shaped by many faith traditions and beliefs, united in our shared commitment to young people. His example will continue to urge us on to promote a world that not only is safe for children and youth but builds a sure foundation for them to live into their great promise.  

Pope Francis was widely respected for his profound love of humanity, his deep concern for the environment, his special care for the poor and marginalized, and his incessant calls for justice and peace. He had a special place in his huge heart for young people. 

In a 2019 exhortation to youth and the Church, Francis assured them, “The very first truth I would tell each of you is this: ‘God loves you.’ It makes no difference whether you have already heard it or not. ... Never doubt this, whatever may happen to you in life. At every moment, you are infinitely loved.” 

Can you imagine how such a message might be received by a young person experiencing homelessness or human trafficking? For young people like those we serve at Covenant House, who have experienced rejection, abuse, and exploitation, a word of love and the relentless and unconditional support that make it real can transform lives. Just like Pope Francis, we know this to be true as we see it every day. 

On behalf of our Covenant House family across 34 cities in five countries, we extend our heartfelt condolences to all who mourn the passing of Pope Francis and renew our pledge to continue to welcome every young person in need of shelter, safety, and healing with unconditional love, absolute respect, and relentless support.
