The Power of Outreach

How Does Covenant House Provide Outreach Across the U.S.?

Young people experiencing homelessness find Covenant House in a variety of ways. But for those young people who can’t find us, our dedicated street and community outreach teams go to them as the bridge to housing, healing, and opportunity.

Today we highlight the incredible outreach work being done across the Covenant House federation, spotlighting three of our houses in particular — Covenant House California, Covenant House Illinois, and Covenant House Michigan.

Covenant House California

In the state of California, there are not enough beds to house all the youth experiencing homelessness. But for many, the immediate need isn't residential services but a safe place to rest and access essential resources. Our day outreach and wellness care programs provide these crucial services.

Youth can drop in to our Covenant House California sites to rest during the day, take a hot shower, enjoy a nutritious meal, do their laundry, and access the internet. Additionally, they receive hygiene products, new clothing and shoes, and engage in day programming that includes case management and referrals to further services.

At Covenant House California, we not only meet young people’s immediate needs but, also, help them discover a pathway to stability and hope. Through these essential services, Covenant House California is creating a supportive environment where youth can begin to rebuild their lives.

Covenant House Illinois

Destiny Peden, a staff member at Covenant House Illinois who works in outreach, shared the story of one young person who faced domestic violence and sex trafficking and arrived at Covenant House with no income, job prospects, or substantial family support. The challenges seemed insurmountable, but with the unwavering support of our team, a remarkable transformation occurred.

Within just two to three months, Destiny said, this youth secured permanent housing and landed two part-time jobs. Actively engaged with their case manager, they are now eagerly pursuing long-term employment opportunities. This story is a powerful testament to the strength and potential of the young people we serve and the life-changing impact of Covenant House’s support.

Covenant House Michigan

In Detroit, the sense of community and family at Covenant House is a cornerstone of our approach. Christopher Alford, a resident for about five or six months, shares his experience in this video

"When Covenant House brought me back and kind of embraced a new sense of community that I didn't know I needed, it was a turning point. Everyone is working to boost each other and help each other make it through this experience. They inspire a sense of independence and reawaken a thirst for knowledge,” said Christopher.

Christopher is now pursuing his CNA certification.

Cleo, another young person at Covenant House Michigan reflects on her journey in a video seen here

"Being homeless is not just having a roof over your head. You could have a roof over your head but still not feel safe. What started it all was that I didn't have a great relationship with my mom. If I hadn't come to Covenant House, I honestly believe that I would not be as personally developed as I am now." With the help of our staff, Cleo has improved her job prospects, academic performance, and personal development, and set herself on a path to success.

The Heart of Covenant House International

These stories from Covenant House California, Illinois, and Michigan underscore the heart of our mission: to accept youth where they are and help them identify what they can become. Through outreach, wellness care, and a supportive community, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of young people experiencing homelessness.
