Music Therapy at Covenant House: Addressing Mental Health Through Creative Expression

A cornerstone of our interventions at Covenant House is mental health care. With more than half of all young people in the U.S. exhibiting symptoms of anxiety and depression, adolescents are particularly vulnerable as they navigate critical developmental stages. The youth we support have often endured significant trauma, including physical and sexual abuse, domestic and street violence, and years of homelessness. These experiences can make the idea of seeking help daunting, especially given the stigmas and derogatory labels associated with mental health issues.

Importance of Mental Health Support

To address these challenges, we offer a variety of therapeutic options, including traditional one-on-one and group talk therapy, as well as alternative therapies such as art, sports, and recreation. At some Covenant House sites, we also provide equine and pet therapy, recognizing the diverse ways in which young people can find healing and expression. One of our most impactful programs involves music therapy.

Music Therapy: Definition, Techniques and Benefits

What exactly is music therapy?

It’s a therapeutic approach that uses music to address the physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of individuals. Some common techniques include listening to music, playing instruments, singing, and songwriting. Music has a unique ability to resonate with individuals on a profound emotional level, making it an effective tool for therapy.

What are the benefits?

  • Emotional expression: Creates a safe environment for young people to express emotions.
  • Decreased stress levels: Listening to music can help young people relax and reduce stress.
  • Social connection: Group music therapy sessions can build friendship, community and a sense of belonging.
  • Communication: Offers an alternative way to express yourself.

Music Therapy Program at CHNY

Our partnership with Republic Records and the Republic Records Action Committee has been particularly transformative for the youth at Covenant House New York. Over the past year, this collaboration has brought a series of artist-development workshops to our site, offering our young people an incredible opportunity to engage with the music industry.

During this 12-week workshop series, members of the Republic Records team work closely with our youth, providing:

  • Songwriting and beat-making sessions.
  • Recording and stage presence training.
  • Mentorship from music industry professionals.
  • Music career insights from special guests.

A highlight of these workshops is the chance for our youth to visit Republic's state-of-the-art recording studio. Here, they can record their original music with the guidance of industry professionals, all while receiving support and encouragement from their peers and the Republic team. The culmination of this program is a youth showcase at the Republic studio, where each participant performs two to three original songs in front of a live audience. This final showcase not only celebrates their hard work and creativity but also boosts their self-esteem and confidence.

Impact of Our Music Therapy Workshops

These music therapy workshops have proven invaluable, providing a safe and healthy outlet for creative expression. Through music, our youth explore and define their identities, learn about the music industry, and develop their personal brand. We are excited to continue this partnership with Republic Records and look forward to offering these life-changing experiences to a new group of young people in the coming months.

By integrating music therapy into our services, Covenant House helps young people heal, grow, and envision a brighter future, one where their voices are heard, and their talents are nurtured.
