Covenant House Helps During Freezing Cold Weather
Freezing temperatures outside pose a lethal threat to all people who are experiencing homelessness and staying outdoors. Every year when it gets cold, Covenant House outreach team members like Stephanie Taylor help everyone on the street, both the young people we primarily serve and older people. As she puts it “This weather will kill you. You can’t be out here in this weather. Older or younger, if you want to go to a warming center, we’re gonna be here to help you.”
When asked why so many people, especially young people, are trying to sleep out in the lethally cold temperatures, Stephanie responded with the brutal truth: “A lot of them just don’t have the money to afford rent.”
It’s words like Stephanie’s that drive our whole mission at Covenant House. We can end youth homelessness as we know it if we take the steps toward preventing homelessness in the first place, intervening to help young people who are currently experiencing homelessness, and making sure that there’s a safe place to go after people have started to rebuild their lives. But for tonight, and every other cold night of the year, Covenant House will be there for everyone looking to get warm.
