Jane: a new mother inspired to give to CH Mother Child Program
Q. What inspires you to give to Covenant House kids?
A.The kids themselves are my inspiration. I recently met some young mothers in the Rights of Passage program and was amazed at how assertive, articulate and thoughtful they are about their new roles in life -- mothering children when they themselves are still so young.
Q. Why did you choose to make an in-kind donation?
A. I liked the idea of my donation going directly into the hands of these young mothers and their children. So when my son was born and my small apartment began filling up with gifts from friends and family, I immediately packed some of them away for Covenant House. The rest of them I donated gently used a year later.
Q. What do you find unique about Covenant House's mission?
A. It's such an awesome responsibility being a mother, even in the best of circumstances. It's almost impossible for a teenager with no job, no money, and no idea how to be a good parent.
Covenant House gives these young women a stable place to stay while they teach them how to care for their children. Staff and volunteers see these young mothers through everything from pre-natal care to independent living workshops.
Q. What would you describe as the greatest reward of giving?
A. Knowing that the children of Covenant House's Mother Child program are well cared for. That they are romping around in my son's p.j.s with the Tickle-Me-Elmo he never knew he had!
