Covenant House Faith Community
Free room and board.
And the chance to change the world for homeless youth.
Faith Community brings together people of all ages who want to make a difference in the lives of Covenant House youth.
Faith Community volunteers have been a source of joy, support, and encouragement to the youth at Covenant House for over 30 years.
Covenant House Faith Community offers the opportunity for individuals to serve homeless youth full time at Covenant House, live in an intentional community with other volunteers, and share in daily prayer/reflection with their community.
Volunteers can serve for 3, 6, or 12 months.
Covenant House was founded 35 years ago to help the suffering children of the streets. Watch our 2007 Annual Dinner video and learn more about the work of Covenant House.
Service
Covenant House gives hope and healing to homeless youth, providing 24/7 crisis care and on-going support for young people in need of a safe haven. Founded in the Roman Catholic tradition, Covenant House has reached more than one million young people with immediate assistance and the support necessary to transition from a life on the streets to a life with a future.
Faith Community volunteers have the opportunity to serve homeless youth full time at Covenant House. Most volunteers serve in our Crisis Centers as Resident Advisors, Youth Advisors, or Case Managers; while others may serve in our Rights of Passage program, medical services, outreach, pastoral ministry, administration, or other support positions. Volunteers receive training for their service placement and have regular scheduled shifts at Covenant House.
Community
During Formation, groups of new volunteers have fun and bond while preparing for their Faith Community service commitment.
Community living provides the support and encouragement necessary for individuals to face the daily challenges of serving homeless youth with energy and joy.
Faith Community volunteers have the opportunity to live in an intentional community, sharing a house with other Faith Community volunteers.
Faith Community volunteer placement is available in:
- Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
- Atlantic City, New Jersey
- New York, New York
Volunteers are beautifully diverse and range in age from recent college graduates to those in retirement. Typically 4 to 6 people live in each house. All volunteers share household responsibilities and participate in community activities and leadership. Volunteers accept the challenge of living simple, respectful, and healthy lifestyles.
Prayer/Reflection
Prayer/reflection can deepen our understanding of the value of serving others, can give us insight into our personal faith or life journeys, and can be a source of strength for each day.
Faith Community volunteers have the opportunity to share time in prayer/reflection together as a community for 30 minutes per day, six days per week. Silence or quiet meditation are integrated into this time. People of all or no faith backgrounds and religious traditions are welcomed and respected. Prayer/reflection comes from the heart of the community - that is, the hearts of all those who are gathered together.
Faith Community Mission Statement
As members of Covenant House Faith Community, we put the values of absolute respect and unconditional love into action through the opportunities of service, community, and prayer/reflection. We believe that with service comes sacrifice, and we offer ourselves to Covenant House with a willingness to serve wherever the need is greatest. We strive to make a difference in the lives of the homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth of Covenant House, as well as being a source of joy and encouragement to our fellow staff. Living in a diverse community, we share ourselves and support one another during our journey together. We embrace the challenge of living simple, respectful, and healthy lives. The opportunity for daily personal and communal prayer/reflection encourages us to grow spiritually, and we welcome people of all or no faith backgrounds and religious traditions. Through our Faith Community experience, we hope to reflect God's love to all those we encounter.
