Covenant House New Jersey
Established in 1989, Covenant House New Jersey operates facilities in Newark and Atlantic City and is the state's largest provider of services to homeless and at-risk youth ages 16-21. In FY2006, Covenant House New Jersey served more than 2,000 young people through the Newark and Atlantic City programs.
On an average night, Covenant House New Jersey provides 110 homeless adolescents and 19 babies a safe and caring place to sleep. Each day, at least a dozen young people walk through the doors of the Covenant House New Jersey Crisis Centers in Newark and Atlantic City for the first time. Arriving anytime of day or night, these young people are looking for a way off the street and for someone to help and care for them. Covenant House New Jersey services include:
Crisis Care
Most kids who come to Covenant House are in crisis and have been "thrown away" by poverty stricken, severely dysfunctional families. Covenant House provides 24-hour crisis care which includes food, clothing, and shelter, health care and counseling.
Street Outreach
Every night, Covenant House counselors drive vans through the city streets searching for young people in need, providing warm clothing, food, counseling, and support. In addition, outreach workers represent Covenant House New Jersey at various health fairs, schools, and other community-based events to spread the word about services available to youth.
Rights of Passage
Provides young men and women aged 18-21 with the chance they need to make a life for themselves away from the street. With the help of professional staff, mentors and volunteers, Rights of Passage residents are provided with educational and vocational opportunities. Residents live at Covenant House while CHNJ staff provide the support these young people need to build a future for themselves.
Mother/Child Program
Raphael's Life House is a residential program located in Elizabeth, NJ that provides special care for pregnant and parenting young women. While living at Raphael's Life House, young women receive treatment in Covenant House New Jersey's on-site medical clinics and participate in other CHNJ programs.
Health Care Services
With many years of neglect and abuse behind them, youth come to Covenant House with numerous physical and mental ailments. Covenant House New Jersey provides comprehensive health care free of charge. A full-time Pediatric Nurse Practitioner provides young people with the care they need. In addition, CHNJ enjoys close working relationships with area hospitals when a young person needs specialty care.
World of Work
Covenant House New Jersey's educational/vocational program, W.O.W., gives young people the tools they need to secure jobs. They learn how to write a resume, how/where to seek employment, and how to properly dress and prepare for an interview. Participants in the program have been employed by companies including UPS, FedEx, and Gateway Security.
