Covenant House Alaska
Since 1988 Covenant House Alaska has been serving homeless and runaway youth in the region. In that time services have expanded and community needs have changed, but the Covenant House Alaska mission -- "To serve the suffering children of the streets" -- remains the same.
Crisis Care
A 40-bed shelter for youth ages 13-20. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to handle youth/family problems. The Crisis Center provides a safe place for the basic needs to be met and the tools for youth to work toward independence and prevent homelessness in the future. Information and referrals are available for any individual calling into the center for help with youth, families, and homelessness.
Community Service Center
This program offers walk-in services to young people in need of support. Services include: counseling and referral, job search assistance, resume writing and other employment support, educational support, access to telephones for local calls, sack lunches, hot/cold drinks and mail and phone message services. In addition Community Service Center programs assist youth in securing a job, maintaining employment, and enhancing employability. Youth are provided assistance in how to look for a job, how to dress, write a resume, interviewing skills, and the social skills necessary to excel in their work environment.
Transitional Living Programs
- Passage House provides supportive housing for parenting and pregnant teens ages 18-20. The focus is on vocational and independent living skills, as well as raising healthy children.
- Rights of Passage provides supportive housing for youth ages 18-20 who are seeking independent living. Youth learn life skills and decision-making techniques necessary to achieve independent living. The primary population served is young adults without housing options or the skills to live independently.
Educational Services
Covenant House Alaska staff, in partnership with the Anchorage School District, provides educational guidance, structure and support to school age youth in a positive learning environment. Through services such as after-school tutoring, remedial education groups, General Equivalency Diploma preparation classes and on-site testing, youth receive the essential tools they need to achieve academic success.
Health Care Services
Life on the streets makes youth highly susceptible and exposes them to a variety of illnesses and injuries. All Covenant House Alaska programs provide access to a wide range of health services including mental health and substance abuse assessment. In addition, a nurse practitioner is on call 24 hours a day.
Advocacy
Covenant House Alaska advocates on behalf of homeless, runaway and at-risk youth at the local, state and federal levels. The agency also offers referrals for direct client services and various youth development programs.
