Purpose of Position:
Responsible for Accounting Management and related activities and financial reporting for Covenant House Headquarters.
Principal Responsibilities:

Prepare and review monthly Covenant House Headquarters financial statements, including analysis of monthly actual versus budget variances.

Prepare annual IRS Form 990 and various NYS filings. Prepare departmental budget.

Oversee and review defined benefit and contribution pension plan audits and individual preparation of form 5500, accounting systems, including the G/L (and G/L analysis), documentation of all journal entries, payroll services, contribution reports, bank reconciliations, maintain insurance and lease schedules, stock reports, tax reports/filings, fixed assets, A/P and payroll, data processing control, process updates related to the G/L System including scheduling of tasks to assure timely closing and reconciliation at month-end and year-end.

Hire, train, and supervise Finance department staff (with the exception of the Administrative Assistant and consolidation area). Establishes and maintains systems for task documentation and cross-training, where feasible.

Review preparation and submit all information required by individual states for registering as a non-profit fundraising agency. Work with independent consultant and staff accountant(s).

Coordinate external and government funding financial audits and take immediate action to achieve higher quality accounting standards where audits identified areas for improvement.

Assist and act as backup for VP of Finance, Chief Accountant and Payroll Manager.

Assures complete, accurate, and timely filing of all financial reporting as required by government, regulatory agencies, funders and others, as required. Avoids legal challenges by understanding current and proposed accounting legislation.

Assist and back-up in preparation of consolidation financial statements of Covenant House and Affiliates in a timely manner. Maintain and manage temporary and permanent restricted funds and the Covenant House Endowment Fund and produce any required financial reports.

Consult with site Financial Directors regarding Faith Community expenses and year end reporting and ensure that the proper procedures are followed and consistency is maintained.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting with a minimum of 8 years experience. (Master's degree or CPA preferred)
- Minimum of 5 years in managerial role and experience in non-profit environment required.
- Requires an in depth knowledge of financial accounting, GAAP, internal and management control systems, information systems applications, and audit planning. In addition, strong analytical capabilities and supervisory skills.
- Must be detail-oriented, proficient in Excel, and possess excellent interpersonal communication, team building, conflict resolution, and supervisory skills.
- Ability to deal with sensitive and confidential information, and handle multiple projects with various deadlines is a necessity.
